FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Becky Flores and Reisa Fessler led the Northwest Nazarene University volleyball team to a five-set comeback victory over the University of Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday night in a GNAC match at the Patty Center in Fairbanks.
The Crusaders (5-9, 5-4 GNAC) rallied for a 15-10 fifth-set win after trailing 20-25, 24-26 in the opening sets, and responding with 27-25 and 25-21 set three and four wins after the break.
Flores led the NNU effort with a 16 kill, 14 dig double-double and Fessler hit a team-high .360 with 10 kills and five blocks. The Crusaders out-hit the Nanooks .169 to .120 in the match.
Tereza Bendlova and Simone Chavous led Alaska Fairbanks (4-10, 2-6 GNAC) with 18 and 16 kills, respectively, and each finished in double-figures on the defensive side as well with 14 and 16 digs apiece.
NNU's defense was led by Haley Hevern with a match-best 26 digs and Kailey Trautman with 17. NNU setters Briana Claassen and Laticia Lehman finished with 17 and 24 assists each and Claassen added four blocks (two solo) in the road victory.
The Crusaders will travel to Alaska Anchorage on Saturday night to complete the GNAC road swing through Alaska. The Seawolves defeated Central Washington University tonight 25-21, 25-18, 12-25, 25-22 in Anchorage, snapping the Wildcats five-match winning streak.
