BURNABY, B.C. - Simon Fraser scored five first-half goals to take a 5-0 conference victory over the Crusaders on Thursday evening at Terry Fox Field in Burnaby, British Columbia.
The undefeated Clan (15-0, 7-0 GNAC) got two goals from Thomas McCole and one each from Gagan Josan, Roman Doutkevitch and Carlo Basso in the opening 32 minutes.
Josan opened the scoring early in the fourth minute after Doutkevitch was hauled down just outside the 18-yard box.
Josan took the ensuing free kick from the top right corner of the box, and fired a shot that dribbled through both Clan and Crusaders players to beat NNU keeper Zander Engeman.
In the 11th minute, Josh Bennett's shot was stopped, but Doutkevitch had a chance inside the box at the rebound and was taken down on a hard tackle by Renatto Brito.
Brito was sent off with a red card and Doutkevitch buried his penalty kick to give Simon Fraser a 2-0 lead.
"It was tough for us, playing down a man so early in the game," commented NNU head coach Coe Michaelson. "They are a very good team and combined with being down a man...it was not a recipe for success."
McCole scored the first of his two goals in the 22nd minute, tapping in a pass inside a cluttered six-yard box.
Basso knotched his team leading seventh goal of the season a little over a minute later, taking a feed from Anthony DiNicolo and firing it off the far post.
In the 32nd minute McCole added his second goal, launching a shot from 25 yards out to put the Clan up 5-0.
The Clan, who outshot the Crusaders 31-6, added to their shot total in the second half, but were unable to beat NNU backup Mitch Rice, who finished the game with eight saves.
Hide Ozawa earned the victory in goal, making one save, and split the shutout with JD Blakley, who played the entire second half for SFU.
