NAMPA, Idaho - Brock Ogami made his Senior Day one to remember, scoring the game-winning goal in double-overtime to lead the Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Saint Martin's University on Saturday afternoon at the NNU Soccer Field.
Ogami controlled a one-touch through ball from
Alex Mangeac in the 104th minute and fired a shot from 15-yards out, beating SMU goalkeeper Zac Lubin inside the right post.
Nate Hamm also received an assist on the tally, starting the play from a free kick deep in NNU territory.
"That was a big win and one we thoroughly deserved," commented NNU head coach
Coe Michaelson. "We felt we should have put it away in regulation, but once it went into overtime, Zander (Engeman) came up huge on a few saves and gave us the chance to get into the second overtime." Engeman finished with nine saves in the match, including three in the opening overtime.
"Being Senior Day it can't get any better than watching Brock score the winner," Michaelson added. "These seniors have played a big role in the progression of our program, so it was a great way to send them off."
NNU (7-6-0, 3-4-0 GNAC) opened the scoring in the 26th minute when
Alex Mangeac fired a 25-yard free kick from the left side of the box just inside the near post for his fourth goal of the season. The Crusaders lead was short lived as an NNU defender's attempt to clear a Saint Martin's crossing pass found the net for an 'own goal' just six minutes later to even the score at 1-1.
Tied into the break,
Jose Oregon scored in the 50th minute, converting from 15-yards out off a Mangeac assist. NNU goalkeeper
Zander Engeman also received an assist on the goal, starting the play with a goal kick that Mangeac one-touched to Oregon. Mangeac finished with two assists and one goal on the day.
The Saints sent the game into overtime in the 62nd minute when Ruben Orosco bent an impressive free kick around the NNU wall from 25-yards out. Orosco's rocket finished high and inside the right post past a diving Engeman.
NNU finished with a 19-15 edge in shots, the Saints held a 6-1 corner kick advantage, and Luben made four saves for the Saints, all during regulation play.
The Crusaders will travel to league-leading Simon Fraser next Thursday (10/28) and Western Washington (10/30) one week from today.
