MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Northwest Nazarene University women's soccer team fell 3-2 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon in a GNAC league match at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.
Trailing 2-1 late in the contest, the Wolves (2-8-0, 1-5-0) got a goal from Marina Austin off a deflected cross at 82:15 to force the overtime.
Austin, who also scored in the opening period from just inside the box at 8:25, then set up Taylor Thompson for the game-winner at 104:24 on a cross. LaChante Horton had assists on both of WOU's first two goals.
Marie Smith had both of Northwest Nazarene's (4-6-0, 2-4-0) goals. After taking a pass from Kendra Courcy, she beat goalkeeper Brittney Rigrup to the ball at the top of the box and scored into the empty net at 10:42.
Smith then converted a penalty kick at 27:59 to give NNU a 2-1 halftime lead.
“Marie (Smith) had a great game in scoring twice for us,” commented NNU head coach Jamie Lindvall. “Our level definitely lacked in the second half and Western Oregon stepped up and capitalized. All credit to them.”
Western Oregon finished with a 15-9 shot advantage over the Crusaders and a 7-6 edge in corners. Tanya Zickefoose had seven of NNU's eight saves and Rigtrup had two saves for WOU.
