LAKEWOOD, Colo. - The Northwest Nazarene University men's soccer team blanked Colorado Christian University 3-0 on Monday afternoon in a NCAA Division II non-conference match in Lakewood, Colorado.
Brock Ogami converted a CCU defensive turnover in the 24th-minute, opening the scoring for the Crusaders (1-2-0), and combining with three Alexander Engemann saves sent the Crusaders to the break with a 1-0 lead.
"It was nice to rebound with a well deserved win today," commented NNU head coach
Coe Michaelson. "We came out with the commitment and desire to win today and played much better. We hit the crossbar three times, hit the post once, and missed a penalty kick, so it could have been much more."
Ben Mangeac and Alonso Avila teamed to score the Crusaders second goal in the 61st-minute as Mangeac took Avila's centering pass into the left side of the net for his first goal of the season.
Alex Mangeac added insurance in the 85th-minute, converting the rebound of his own shot that hit the near post.
NNU goalkeeper Engemann recorded his first shutout of the season and finished with five saves.
CCU (1-2-0) goalkeeper Jared Jacobs allowed two goals and grabbed four saves, while Andrew Sullivan allowed one goal.
The Crusaders held a 20-12 shot advantage over the Cougars and a 6-3 margin in corner kicks.
"Now we will work hard this week and come out ready to go for our opening home games," Michaelson added. The Crusaders will play their home opener on Saturday when they host The Academy of Art at 3:30 p.m. at the NNU Soccer Field.
