SEASIDE, Calif. - Leadoff hitter Ty Windall had five hits, including a bunt single to break a 9-9 tie in the final inning as Northwest Nazarene improved to 6-1 with a doubleheader sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay Wednesday at Seaside, Calif.
The Crusaders (6-1) scored five runs in the seventh to win the nightcap 14-9. In the first game, NNU built a 9-0 lead and survived a six-run Otter seventh to win 11-7.
"The kids really played gutsy today," commented NNU skipper Tim Onofrei. "In the second game we were deep into the line-up card, at one point we had five freshman on the field, and they responded."
Windall's go-ahead bunt hit was the third of the inning. Colton Douglas led off the frame with a bunt hit, stole second and advanced to third on a bunt hit by Boone Farrington before scoring on Windall's safety.
NNU added four more runs on a wild pitch, a single by
Jimmy VanBeek and RBI doubles by Connor Rankin and
Cory Warburton.
Windall and VanBeek each had three hits in the contest, while
Joel Oliver and Warburton had two.
Nate Slonaker picked uo the win in relief despite allowing four runs, all unearned in the sixth.
In the first game, NNU scored six runs in the sixth to go ahead 9-0, then got insurance runs in the eighth and ninth.
Windall, Jon Keller and Oliver each had two hits in the contest. Keller, who drove in two runs, pitched the first six innings to earn his second win of the season. Keller has hit in all seven NNU games.
The Crusaders will now travel to Lewis Clark State College on February 20th and 21st to compete in the Guardian Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning Tournament in Lewiston, Idaho.
