NAMPA, Idaho - The Northwest Nazarene University women's basketball team forced 40 Cal State Los Angeles turnovers on Friday night, winning the second game of the 2009 NNU GNAC/CCAA Classic 89-51 over the Golden Eagles at the Johnson Sports Center in Nampa.

The Crusaders, who improve to 8-1 overall, placed four players in double-figures led by Jennifer Williams with 18.  Lindsay Brady scored 14 and both Briaunna King and Kristin Hein scored 12 and had seven rebounds each.

Cal State Los Angeles (1-5, 0-3 CCAA) was led by Jazzi Johnson with 13 points and seven rebounds.

NNU out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 34-30 and converted the 40 CSULA turnovers into 49 points, shooting 48-percent (30-62) from the field and 28-of-34 (82-percent) from the free throw line.

Julie Bazzi and Beth Johnson led the Crusaders with four assists each as NNU handed out 22 assists against 21 turnovers.  Johnson finished with eight points, five rebounds, and four assists.

In the opening game of the classic, Cal Poly Pomona defeated Western Oregon 63-62.

Cal Poly Pomona (4-1, 1-1 CCAA) was led by Reyana Colson with a game-high 23 points, while WOU (4-6, 0-0 GNAC) was paced by Katie Torland with 21.

CPP dominated the glass against the Wolves, out-rebounding Western Oregon 42-28, including 17 offensive rebounds for the Broncos.  Stephisha Walton posted the games only double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds for CPP.

Despite the margin on the glass, Western Oregon still had a chance to convert the game winner in the final seconds.

WOU led 28-23 at halftime and held the lead for a majority of the second half, leading by as many as 14 at 47-33 with 13:07 to play.  However, the Broncos chipped away at the margin and built a 21-6 run to tie the score at 54-54 with just under five minutes to play.

Nip and tuck the rest of the way, CPP's Walton converted a pair of free throws with 12 seconds remaining to give the Broncos a 63-60 lead, however, Pomona's Sarah Semenero was whistled for an intentional foul with only two seconds remaining, setting Western Oregon up for the game winner as Shayla Corder made both free throws to cut the lead to one at 63-62.  The Wolves then called a timeout to set up Torland for the game-winning attempt, but her 10-foot bank shot from the right side of the lane slid just long at the final horn.

The teams will trade opponents tomorrow afternoon with Western Oregon facing CSULA at Noon and the Crusaders hosting Cal Poly Pomona at 2:30 p.m.
