MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Northwest Nazarene University women's basketball team fell 57-54 to Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday afternoon at the 2009 WOU/Phoenix Inn D2 Shootout, hosted by Western Oregon University.

 

The Crusaders finished 1-1 in the season opening tournament, playing two NCAA D.II in-region opponents in Mesa State and Cal State Monterey Bay.  NNU defeated Mesa State 72-64 on Friday afternoon to open the season.

 

Jen Williams scored 14 points to lead the Crusaders and share game-high honors with CSMB's London Houchin.  Williams, a senior from Boise, Id, added four rebounds to her stat line and was the only Crusader to reach double-figures.

 

Veronica Williams and Julie Heurung each scored 13 to join Houchin, as the Otters improved to 2-0 on the young season.

 

The difference in the game came from the outside, as CSUMB went 8-for-24 from the three point line, while the Crusaders converted just 3-of-8, with all three coming off the hand of senior guard Janee Olds, who finished with nine points.  Olds added a team-high six rebounds.

 

Both teams grabbed an identical 32 rebounds, with each team finishing with eight offensive and 24 defensive boards.  The squads also shot nearly identical percentages from the floor with NNU going 23-for-55 (41.8-percent) and CSUMB at 23-for-54 (42.6-percent).  Each team committed 18 turnovers and only attempted six free throws, with the Crusaders at 5-for-6 and the Otters at 3-for-6.

 

Lindsay Brady and Kristin Hein each added eight points for NNU and Brittney Roggenkamp finished with six points and five rebounds.

 

The Crusaders will return to Idaho and host the NNU Thanksgiving Classic next Friday and Saturday at the Johnson Sports Center in Nampa, facing Cal State Stanislaus on Friday and Colorado Christian on Saturday.  Both games will tip-off at 5:15 p.m. and will be part of the men's and women's eight-team classic tournament.
