ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The University of Alaska Anchorage defeated Northwest Nazarene University 25-18, 25-22, 25-16 on Thursday night in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on the UAA campus.
The win clinched the GNAC championship for the West Region No. 5 Seawolves (21-7, 13-2 GNAC), who were led by Jackie Matthisen with 13 kills and 13 digs, and McKenzie Moss who posted 12 kills and 10 digs.
"Congratulations to UAA on winning the GNAC title," commented NNU head coach Jared Sliger. "They are a great team that is playing with a tremendous amount of confidence right now...and getting better and better as the season progresses."
The Crusaders (15-13, 8-7 GNAC) were paced by
Cammy Dranginis and Becky Flores who each had seven kills. Carly Dranginis chipped in with six kills,
Haley Hevern led the NNU defense with 17 digs, and Flores added three blocks.
"I felt that Cammy and Becky played well tonight," Sliger added. "But it wasn't enough against the UAA attack."
UAA out hit NNU .263 to .189 and had seven service aces as Calli Scott, Nikkie Viotto, and Moss each had two scoring strikes from the service line.
The Crusaders will close out the 2009 season on Saturday night in Fairbanks against the University of Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center on the UAF campus.
