NAMPA, Idaho - The Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team remained unbeaten in the young season after battling Whitman College to a scoreless tie on a sunny Labor Day at the NNU Soccer Field.
The Crusaders (2-0-1) played 110 minutes of scoreless action against the Missionaries (1-0-2), with the most dangerous NNU scoring opportunity coming in the 33rd-minute. Ben Mangeac beat Whitman keeper Brett Axelrod on a bouncing ball up the middle, took one step past the keeper from 18-yards out and hit a soft shot along the ground headed for the open goal. However Whitman defender Joe Johnson could see the play developing and made a tremendous effort, sprinting across the box to slide in and clear the ball just one yard before crossing into the goal, ending the NNU threat.
Whitman out-shot the Crusaders 14-12 overall, however NNU provided the most pressure in the overtime periods, out-shooting the Missionaries 5-1 in the extra frames.
Stellar work in goal was provided by both Axelrod and NNU's Zander Engemann, with Axelrod earning three saves and Engemann six.
The Missionaries nearly took the lead in the 50th minute when a shot by Kevin Sigley hit the far post, coming out of a crowd of defenders just seven yards out, but the shot deflected off of NNU's Engemann and the ensuing corner kick would be played out by the NNU defense.
The Crusaders will travel to both Cascade College and George Fox University next weekend for a pair of non-conference games.
