ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Central Washington University swept a Great Northwest Athletic Conference twinbill from the Crusaders on Saturday, defeating NNU 6-4 and 4-3 in Ellensburg.
In the opener, CWU scored four first-inning runs, then held on for a
6-4 victory. Then in the nightcap, the Wildcats scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a
4-3 victory.
CWU (18-11, 12-3) scored on a bases-loaded hit pitch, a sacrifice fly by Hank Anderson and a two-run single by John Lobbestael to grab a 4-0 lead in the opener.
McCanna (5-0), who finished with six walks and eight strikeouts, threw zeros until NNU scored twice in the sixth on a single by Jimmy VanBeek and a bases-loaded walk to Ryan Bailey to cut CWU's lead to 5-2.
Reliever Jake Millbauer then pitched the final three innings, allowing only two ninth inning runs to earn the save.
Nilsen, who scored two runs, and Tyler Scoggin, who doubled for an insurance run in the sixth, each had two hits.
Severo Rodriguez and Zach Aakhus led NNU with two hits. Rodriguez scored two runs and Aakhus scored a run and drove in a run.
In the nightcap, Northwest Nazarene (21-15, 5-11) grabbed a 3-1 lead in the sixth on a two-run home run by Jimmy VanBeek, his second hit in two official at bats in the game.
But, in the seventh, CWU, which won three of the four games in the series, loaded the bases on a hit batter, walk and error. Nate Rylaarsdam and Frank Donangelo then had back-to-back singles to tie the game 3-3.
NNU reliever Nate Slonaker struck out Anderson, but walked pinch-hitter Sean Sloppy to force in the winning run.
Nilsen went three-for-three to finish the four-game series with eight hits in 12 at bats. The CWU shortstop is now hitting .447, including .509 in conference games. Gosney, Rylaarsdam and Donangelo all had two hits.
Kevin Walkenhauer pitched a hitless seventh after replacing starter Jordan Moore to earn his second win against one loss. Slonaker was charged with the defeat falling to 3-2.
