NAMPA, Idaho - The Crusaders and Wolves combined for 34 hits in the 10-inning opening game and then let the pitchers take over in the nightcap as Western Oregon University swept a Great Northwest Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader 10-9 and 5-0 from Northwest Nazarene on Friday night at Vail Field in Nampa.
Western Oregon (14-11, 3-3 GNAC) racked up 19 hits, while the Crusaders (11-8, 1-5 GNAC) pounded out 15 in game one, with WOU striking the final blow in the top of the tenth to take the 10-9 decision in extra frames. Ben Shivers (2-3) earned the win for the Wolves with NNU reliever
Cory Warburton (1-1) taking the loss.
Zack Aakhus led the Crusaders with three hits, while
Jimmy VanBeek,
Severo Rodriguez,
Tim Puckett,
Cole Smith and
Ryan Bailey each had two. VanBeek finished with three RBI to lead the Crusaders.
Ryan Lewis led the Wolves, going four-for-five with a game-high five RBI. Dylan Bruck added three hits and Drew Humphrey, Taylor Mieras, Eric Renander and Cesar Lopez all had two.
Game two featured two complete-game pitching performances, most notably from WOU's Mike Ward.
Ward (3-1) earned the win, scattering three NNU hits over seven innings, striking out seven and not surrendering a walk.
Andy Pottenger (2-1) took the loss for the Crusaders, striking out nine and walking four. WOU scored two in the second, one in the fifth and two in the seventh on nine total hits.
The teams return tomorrow to complete the four-game GNAC series. The first-pitch is scheduled for noon.
