Waipahu, Hawaii - First baseman Jimmy VanBeek had four hits and second baseman Mitch Kochis had three hits and three RBI as Northwest Nazarene defeated Hawaii Pacific 12-7 Thursday in the first game of a baseball doubleheader.
The Crusaders, however, were no-hit in the second game by Kaimi Mead, who walked three and fanned 10 in a 7-0 victory.
In the opener, the Crusaders snapped a 5-5 tie, scoring three runs in the sixth on a double by Tyler Liebelt, a wild pitch and a infield single by Zach Aakhus.
NNU then added two insurance runs each in the seventh and eighth. Kyle Holloway pitched the first 5 2/3 innings to earn the victory. Liebelt and Joel Oliver pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to preserve the win.
In the second game, Hawaii Pacific (10-3) used nine hits, seven walks and a pair of sacrifice flies to score seven runs and drop the Crusaders to 7-2.
The Sea Warriors and Crusaders continue their series tomorrow, February 29. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4:00 p.m. (7 p.m. MST) at Hans L'Orange Field.
