GOLDEN, Colo. - The inside trio of
Kendall Gielow,
Brian Barkdoll and
Scott Helpenstell combined to score 46 of the Crusaders 83 points on Saturday to power the Northwest Nazarene men's basketball team to an 83-73 victory over Regis University at the Colorado Mines Classic in Golden, Colorado.
Gielow led the Crusaders with 16, Barkdoll posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Helpenstell scored 15 on seven-of-seven shooting as NNU improved to 4-1 on the season. The trio shot a combined 19-of-24 from the floor and was joined in double figures by
Louie Beech who added 14.
"The big guys really carried us tonight," NNU head coach Tim Hills commented. "They played solid and it feels good to come home with two wins this weekend."
NNU, which held a 28-21 edge on the glass, shot 58.8-percent (30-51) from the floor, 31.3-percent from the arc (5-16), and 81.8-percent (18-22) from the free throw line.
Regis (1-3) was led by Matt Rosinski who scored a game-high 23 points. Bill Brandonberg and Jason Burke-Kavros each netted 12.
The Crusaders will return to Nampa and host the Shilo Inn Classic next weekend at the Johnson Sports Center. NNU will face Colorado Mines on Friday and UC Colorado Springs on Saturday with Central Washington University playing the same two teams on opposite days.
