GOLDEN, Colo. - Anthony Golden's 15-foot jumper with 3/10ths of a second remaining gave Northwest Nazarene a 62-60 win over Colorado School of Mines on Friday in the Mines Thanksgiving Classic at Golden, Colorado.
Golden's jumper completed an NNU comeback from a five-point deficit (56-51) with 3:58 left. From that point on, the Crusaders outscored the Orediggers 9-2 going ahead on a three-pointer with 33 seconds left by
Kendall Gielow.
Colorado Mines, however, tied up the game on a jumper by Kyle Pape with 20 seconds left, setting up the stage for Golden's game-winner.
"It was not a pretty game, but our guys came through at the end," commented NNU assistant coach Brandon Rinta. "Anthony, Kendall and Brian all make key baskets or free throws in the final two minutes."
Gielow led NNU (3-1) with 15 points, while Golden had 13.
Brian Barkdoll and
Louie Beech had 10. All of Beech's points came in the second half and Barkdoll's final two were critical free throws with 1:27 remaining and the Crusaders trailing by three, setting up Gielow's three-pointer that followed a defensive stop.
Pape led Mines with 16 points and Gordon Galloway had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Both players had a dozen points in the second half.
"Adam (Shildmyer) did a good job on Pape," Rinta added. "Pape scored 16, but he was just 3-of-9 from the field and Adam was in him all night."
NNU finished the contest with a 41-30 rebounding advantage as Barkdoll had eight. Eighteen of its rebounds came at the offensive end.
The Crusaders will face Regis University tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. MT
