NAMPA, Idaho - Ryan Brand scored the game-winner in the 99th-minute as Seattle Pacific University defeated Northwest Nazarene 3-2 in overtime on Monday afternoon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match at the NNU Soccer Field.
Brand dribbled a ball deep inside the left edge of the goal box and sent a high arching shot that found the net just inside of the far post below the crossbar. His fourth goal of the season, Brand's shot was from only 6-yards out, but covered nearly 25-yards on the steep angle in the final minute of the first overtime period.
The win moves the Falcons to 4-2-0 in GNAC play, 5-6-3 overall, while the Crusaders fall to 2-4-1 in league matches and 9-4-2 overall.
"I was very proud of our boys today, we came out hard and to go two goals up in the first twenty minutes was great," commented NNU head coach Coe Michaelson.
The Crusaders opened the scoring early as Alex Mangeac sent a shot from 8-yards out inside the right post from brother Ben Mangeac to take an early 1-0 lead. Ben Mangeac served the ball in to Alex from the right side, just above the box for the one-touch finish.
Just two minutes later the Crusaders struck again when Brock Ogami took a pass from Jeremy Mangeac up the middle and beat two defenders for a 15-yard shot from straight away to make it 2-0 in the 12th-minute.
However, momentum would turn in the 20th-minute as NNU's Jose Oregon drew a red-card for a hand ball on a hard shot that would have scored, giving Alex Nelson a penalty kick for the Falcons, which he converted for his fifth goal of the season to cut the Crusader lead to 2-1.
Playing a man down, the Crusaders clung to the lead into second half until Griffin Fahling served a pretty ball off a direct kick in the 56th-minute that was headed home by Enis Isufi from 6-yards out. Isufi found his way between two defenders and sent his header into the right side of the goal.
"The red card obviously changed the game, but to play 80 minutes down a man and still have several opportunities to score against a good SPU team was encouraging," Michaelson added. "We are a young team and this performance shows what we are capable of."
Opportunities that included an Alex Mangeac shot in the 97th-minute that forced SPU's Kaleb Kuehn to make one of his 11 saves on the day and preserving the tie for the Falcons, setting up the game-winner just two minutes later.
The Crusaders held a slim 22-17 shot lead on the Falcons, but did hold a 13-6 shots on goal advantage. NNU keeper Zander Engemann earned three saves.
NNU will travel to Saint Martin's University on Saturday for their final GNAC match of the season, a 12:30 p.m. PST kick-off in Lacey, Washington. The Crusaders will then play four non-conference road matches to complete their season.
