SALT LAKE CITY - Playing their first road game of the season, the Northwest Nazarene University women's soccer team tied Westminster College 1-1 on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match at Dumke Field.
The Crusaders (2-1-1) and Griffins (4-0-1) were tied 0-0 at the half, but WC struck in the 49th minute when Jennifer Pirente scored when she gained possession of a defensive deflection and fired it past NNU goalkeeper Amanda Peters. NNU battled back to even the score in the 77th minute when Kendra Courcy scored off a free kick from just outside the box. A high-arching shot from 30 yards out resulted in her second goal of the season.
"We had some great opportunities, but just couldn't find the back of the net," commented NNU head coach Jamie Lindvall. "We dominated the play and moved the ball very well on a huge, 120 by 80 FieldTurf field, so I'm very pleased with the team's effort. Defensively we did a good job, but we had the one defensive deflection that created a chance for them to score."
NNU out-shot the Griffins 14-6, forcing WC's Kelsey Allen to make 11 saves. NNU's Peters was credited with four saves with the Crusaders also holding a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
NNU will return to Nampa and host Whitman College on Saturday at noon.
