NAMPA, Idaho - Kendall Gielow scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Northwest Nazarene men's basketball team to a 75-69 non-conference victory over Pacific University on Saturday afternoon at the Johnson Sports Center in Nampa.
Gielow, who made his first six field goal attempts before finishing the game 8-for-12 from the floor, also grabbed seven rebounds, dished two assists and had two steals.
The Crusaders (3-0) used their size advantage over Pacific as inside threat Scott Helpenstell also finished in double-figures with 17 points and eight rebounds. Louie Beech scored 12 points in his first action of the season, delayed due to a wrist injury.
Joe Van Domelen led the Boxers (0-3) with 18 points, 14 of which game in the first-half, while Maurice Ross also reached twin digits with 15. Donnie Harrison-Davis shared game-high rebounding honors with Helpenstell with eight boards and also chipped in nine points. Pacific University, a member of the Northwest Conference, is an NCAA Division III institution located in Forest Grove, Oregon.
The Crusaders trailed 43-37 at the break, but committed just three turnovers and forced Pacific into nine in the second half, taking the lead for good with 1:53 to play on a Tyler Roberts three-pointer. NNU would go 13-of-15 from the free throw line in the second half and seal the victory with free throws by both Adam Shildmyer and Gielow. Shildmyer would finish with seven points and five rebounds.
NNU will host the annual Shilo Inn & Suites Classic next weekend, welcoming MSU Billings, Colorado Christian University and Colorado School of Mines to Nampa for the all-NCAA D.II classic formatted tournament on Friday and Saturday. NNU will face Colorado Christian on Friday at 7 p.m., with MSU Billings playing Colorado School of Mines at 5 p.m.
