Crusaders roll over Western Oregon

| By:

NAMPA, Idaho - In a battle of NCAA Division II regionally ranked teams, Cammy Dranginis and Lindsay Forseth combined for 28 kills and just three hitting errors as the Crusaders toppled Western Oregon University 30-14, 30-18, 30-26 on Thursday night in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match in Nampa.

Dranginis, who led all players with 17 kills, had five blocks and hit a rock-solid .556 on the night, while Forseth had 11 kills with just one hitting error to hit .417 as the Pacific Region eighth-ranked Crusaders improved to 7-4 in the GNAC and 13-6 overall. The Wolves, who were tied for first in the GNAC coming into the match and ranked sixth in the Pacific Region, fall to 10-2 in conference and 13-6 overall as the Crusaders snapped a seven-game winning streak for WOU.

"Our girls executed the game plan perfectly," commented NNU head coach Jared Sliger. "We didn't want to get into a digging contest with them and our plan was to terminate the ball early and try not to have long rallies."

NNU dominated play after the first five points were played, as Western Oregon jumped out to a 5-0 lead. However, the Crusaders would score 14 of the next 16 points and go on to win the opener 30-14 with a momentum building 28-7 run to end the game. The Crusaders hit .400 in game one and then .438 in game two, starting the game with an 11-2 run and then taking a 20-5 lead at one point.

Game three was much closer as Western Oregon would take a 19-18 lead, however the Crusaders would regroup and finish off the match with two Forseth kills to avenge an earlier season loss in Monmouth that was very similar to Thursdays victory.

Kristy Wigren led all defenders with 21 digs as NNU out-dug the Wolves 65 to 48 with Forseth grabbing the only double-double of the match with 14 digs to accompany her 11 kills. Loni Evenson chipped in with nine kills and 13 digs and Allison James handed out a match-high 33 assists.

"Kristy's 21 dig effort was exactly what we have been needing," Sliger added.

NNU hit .342 for the night, making just 10 hitting errors and held the Wolves to .077, out-blocking the visitors 6 to 2.

Stacey Bennett led the Wolves with 14 kills and a .367 hitting percentage and setter Amy Herron had 14 digs.

The Crusaders will look to extend their three-match winning streak on Saturday when they host Saint Martin's University at 7:00 p.m. in a GNAC counter
