NAMPA, Idaho - Western Oregon University freshman Naomi Shimabuku scored in the 75th minute as the Wolves defeated Northwest Nazarene University 1-0 on Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match in Nampa.
WOU's Maggie Kuzmer sent a pass from the right side across the box to find Shimabuku, who then scored her first goal of the season at the 75:17 mark.
"They deserved the win today, they (Western Oregon) played very well," commented NNU head coach Jamie Lindvall. "It was an even, hard-fought match."
The Crusaders fall to 7-6-1 overall and 4-5-0 in GNAC action, while the Wolves improve to 3-10-2 overall and 3-6-0 in league play.
The Crusaders forced the action throughout the match, evidenced by a 6-1 lead in corner kicks, but could not find the net as WOU's Kelsie Blachly earned the shutout in goal for the Wolves with six saves. NNU held an 11-7 lead in shots, but shots on goal were even at 6-6. NNU's keeper Amanda Merrell turned away five.
NNU will now play four straight road matches, with the first at Central Washington University next Thursday at 3:00 p.m. PST.
