Crusaders strong at GNAC Indoor Championships

By Mike Stetson of the Idaho Press-Tribune.                              NAMPA – It was the perfect finish to a very good day.

Northwest Nazarene freshman triple jumper Amanda Merrell won the very last event of the day with a mark of 36 feet, 9 inches, a meet and school record, at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference indoor track and field championship meet on Saturday.

And she made a bit of NNU history as the freshman from Spokane, Wash., becomes the first-ever indoor conference champ.

“It feels pretty darn good, it’s exciting to see your hard work pay off finally,” Merrell said of the win.  “I’m finally jumping forward,” she added of an effort that saw her best 36 feet four times in the meet. “I jump way too high usually and that just kills my momentum.”

Momentum that Merrell, who finished 11th in the long jump earlier in the day with a leap of 15-8 ¼, had to regain mid-meet.

“I was really pretty upset after long jump, it didn’t go nearly how I wanted to,” said Merrell. “…I had to be battling with myself that whole time and I finally just got myself pumped up and was ready to jump again.”   But even with her best effort of the year – by nine inches – Merrell still had a few tense in the triple jump, too, as Katy Kociemba of Western Oregon took second with a huge final effort, a 36- 7 ¾ jump.

“It was kinda like trying to hold your breath longer than you can,” said NNU coach John Spatz of watching Merrell’s mark hold of Kociemba.  But certainly a highlight on a day when Merrell was among a slew of Crusaders athletes who earned All-GNAC honors in eight events by placing in the top three.

“I’m proud of the kids that got seconds and thirds, we had a number of All-Conference kids,” said Spatz, adding. “Having Amanda win is a little bit of frosting on the cake, but it was a pretty good cake.”

Right behind Merrell’s title came Crusader senior Melanie Nisley who doubled with All-GNAC honors in the mile and 800, then added an All-Conference effort in the distance medley relay with teammates Kim Berberick, Morgan Ingersoll and Mandi Johnson as the Crusaders took third in 13 minutes, 2.31 seconds.

Early in the meet, though, Nisley battled Central Washington’s Brandy Anderson for second most of the mile, hanging back four seconds of eventually mile champ Karen Dickson of Seattle Pacific (5:08.23).  But when it came time for that final 200 meters, Nisley blew past Anderson for second in 5:10.24.

“I probably should have gone about 400 or 300 and waited till about 200, just kinda (wimped) out a little bit,” said the NNU senior, who added she was excited about earning all-conference honors.  Despite that, Nisley did feel pretty good about the race.  “I just wanted to compete with the top two, for sure,” she said. “I would have liked to compete a little more with first place, but felt comfortable about how I ended.”

And impressive effort to start the day with the 800 and distance medley relay still looming.  “It’s gonna be an intense day but hopefully my hour and a half will give me time to breath and get going again in the eight,” said Nisley, who finished third in the 800 in 2:20.02 to earn her second All-GNAC honor of the meet.

And again she did it with a strong final lap, passing Seattle Pacific’s Victoria Perkins and nearly catching second-place Lindy Mullen of Central Washington (2:19.05), while SPU’s Josie Lavin won the race in 2:16.09.

Not the only great effort for the Crusaders, though, as Emily Peterson took second in the high jump hitting an NCAA Division II national provisional qualifying mark of 5 feet, 6 inches.  “It’s amazing, that’s the best way to describe it,” said Peterson, who also set a meet record along with SPU’s Danielle Ayers-Stamper, who also cleared 5-6 to win the title.  The Falcon junior, Ayers-Stamper enjoyed plenty of success on the day adding wins in the long jump (18-9 3/4) and 60-meter hurdles (8.66).  “It feels great,” she said, adding, “I wasn’t sure what to expect coming in because I haven’t come down to this meet before, but I was pretty pumped.”  Already having automatically qualified for nationals in each event, Ayers-Stamper also set meet records with all her wins, as almost every event came up a meet record.

As for Peterson, she was pumped about her effort, a provisional qualifying mark for nations.  “I don’t think it’s actually hit in yet,” she said, adding, “I’m really excited that I was able to do what I was able to do.”  Peterson also earned All-GNAC honors in the 4x400 relay with teammates Nikki Schutte, Bekah Bowman and Ashley Rickels as they clocked a third-place time of 4:08.53.

A feet equaled by the NNU men’s 4x400 relay team of Eddie Wheeler, Greg Hamm, Brandon Hill and Casey Hartwig, which clocked a second-place time of 3:26.02. The Crusader men tried for a GNAC title, but fell behind on the third leg and couldn’t catch Central Washington, which won in 3:25.54.

The performance was the second All-GNAC honor for Hamm, as the freshman jumper finisher fourth in the long jump with a leap of 21-5 1/4, just out of the honors, but came back with a second-place leap of 45-9 ¾ in the triple jump.  “It feels great,” Hamm said of his All-GNAC performance. “I tried to come out and do the best I can today, I didn’t win it like I was expecting to but there’s other reasons for that.  And I still came out and had fun competing with the guys I competed with today.”

Including that relay team.

“The relay was so much fun,” Hamm said. “I love cheering with my guys, they’re the funnest guys on the earth to run the relay with, and to share that experience at the conference meet with them was great.”

Not that everything went perfect as Hannah Bowman had a chance to win the weight throw but saw her kind of explode when a weld broke on the handle of her weight during one of her throws, and didn’t make the finals.

“I felt bad for Hannah Bowman,” said Spatz. “She had a weight basically explode in her hands and that kinda shook her confidence.”  And as a team, the Crusaders couldn’t catch the frontrunners of Seattle Pacific, which won the women’s title with 188 points, and Western Washington, which edged Western Oregon 141-134 for the men’s title.

The NNU women finished fourth with 65 points and the Crusader men were fifth with 54 points.
