Ryan begins his sixth year with the Crusader women’s basketball program after graduating from NNU 2006 with a degree in Social Science Education.

Ryan was named the Associate Head Coach following the 2010-11 season when he served as the acting head coach while Kelli Lindley took a leave of absence.  He led the Crusaders to a 14-13 overall record last season, including a 9-9 mark in conference play and a bid to the GNAC post-season tournament.

Prior to joining the women’s basketball program, Ryan played professionally for the Central Oregon Hotshots of the International Basketball League and then in Europe, playing for the Tus Bramsche Kangaroos in Bramsche, Germany, where he led the league in three-pointers and was in the top-five in league scoring.

McCarthy and coach Lindley share similar backgrounds, having both graduated from Crook County High School in Prineville, Oregon and McCarthy played two years of high school basketball for Gordon Kronberger, who is coach Lindley’s father. Furthering the basketball and family connection, McCarthy married the former Jenny Binford, who played at NNU for coach Lindley. Jenny and Ryan have a son, Donovan, who is two years old.

While at Tus Bramsche, Ryan coached the amateur team affiliated with the sports club, which consisted of players’ ages 20 to 26 to the Bezirksliga championship.

As a player, McCarthy started for four years as a Crusader and is currently the third ranked player in three-point field goals at NNU, making 260 treys over his career, including a second-best all-time 102 three’s during the 2005-06 season.  His mark of 102 three-pointers still leads the GNAC single-season recordbook with a 3.78 per game average.  Ryan also sits in second place all-time in free throw shooting, making 88.3-percent (159-180) over his career and made nine three-pointers in a game against Seattle Pacific.  He received the NNU Orrin Hills Male Athlete award in 2006 and scored 1,161 career points for the Crusaders.

Ryan continues to play in his spare time and captured the 2008 Spokane Hoopfest 6' and over Elite Championship and was named the tournament MVP.  He was featured in Nike's www.ballernetwork.com as the July 2008 Baller of the Month and was also in the 2010 Slam Magazine online.

“I can’t think of a better place to be, or a more exciting time to be involved in this program.  My wife and I know that this is where God wants us to be and know that Nampa and NNU are home.”
