Shane Peterson enters his third season with the NNU track & field program as the Assistant Coach for Throws in the 2023-24 academic year.
In 2022-23, Peterson's throws athletes tallied five USTFCCCA All-Region awards, including Dylan Hendry as the Top Regional Performer in the indoor weight throw. Between Hendry (weight throw, hammer) and Destany Herbert (shot put), the Nighthawks throwers also earned four individual GNAC titles between the indoor and outdoor meets.Â
During the 2021-22 season, Peterson's throws squad was among the best in the region with three athletes earning six USTFCCCA All-Region nods between the indoor and outdoor seasons. The Nighthawks had one national qualifier in the javelin and also won three GNAC individual titles in throwing events.
Peterson came to NNU after spending the last 21 years coaching the track & field program at his alma mater, Point Loma. He spent his first five years as an assistant coach, next 11 as assistant coach and strength & conditioning coach, and the last five as the associate head coach. While at Point Loma, he coached numerous All-American athletes in multiple events. He also taught in the Kinesiology department as both an adjunct and full-time instructor during his tenure.
He also competed at Point Loma as a student, winning three NAIA National Championships in the javelin (1998, 1999, 2000), finishing as the National Runner-Up in the decathlon in 2000, and earning another All-American honor with a sixth-place finish in the decathlon in 1998. Following his collegiate career, he also competed in the javelin at the 2000 Olympic Trials in Sacramento, California.
While at Point Loma, Peterson received his Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education Teaching/Coaching in 2000. After that, he earned a Master's of Science in Physical Education/Strength and Conditioning from Azusa Pacific University in 2004.Â
Peterson is a member of United States of America Track & Field (USATF), United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA), and (National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He holds a USATF Level 1 Certification, USTFCCCA Technical Coaching Certificate and Throwing Events Certificate, and is an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.
