Nighthawks Drop Final Two of Road Trip

LACEY, Wash. - The NNU softball team dropped the final two games of their road trip against Saint Martin's on Monday afternoon.

Game One - NNU 3, SMU 4

The Nighthawks opened the scoring in the second inning after Lola Crosby worked a leadoff walk and advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. After a Lauryn Bergevin flyout and Riglee Peterson strikeout, Annie Swanson knocked in a run on an infield single. Ava Clark then tripled to left-center scoring Swanson from first.

Saint Martin's answered back in the bottom half of the third. Haley Agena started the inning with a single to right, and Shelby Lawson reached on an error, advancing Agena to second. A Heather Ebner groundout moved Agena to third, Lawson to second, and a Kaylee Walker double would tie the game at two.

Hailey Harris gave the Nighthawks the lead with a solo shot in the top of the fifth but a Nighthawk error would allow Shelby Lawson to tie it back up in the bottom half of the inning.

NNU was able to get the first two batters of the inning out but would intentionally walk Ebner. Eva Spencer would pinch run for Ebner and a Kaylee Walker single would put the winning run in scoring position. Taylor Oregeles would then single to center and Eva Spencer would score on a close play at the plate to take game one.

Miah Lusk pitched 5.0 innings and gave up five hits, three runs, with six strikeouts. Lynsey Chiala (L, 2-1) came in relief, pitched 1.2 innings giving up two hits, one run, with one strikeout. Ava Clark led NNU two hits and an RBI.

Game Two - NNU 1, SMU 3

SMU picked up right where they left off in game two as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first. Haley Agena singled to start the game for the Saints and found herself on second after a wild pitch and Shelby Lawson walked on a full count. Kaylee Walker singled to left, driving in Agena and Taylor Oregeles reached on a fielder's choice to score Lawson.

Lauryn Bergevin would single and Riglee Peterson would walk for the Nighthawks but both players were stranded after Annie Swanson struck out looking. Neither team was able to plate another run until the top of the sixth where the Nighthawks would cut the SMU lead in half. With two outs, Lola Crosby singled to right-center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lauryn Bergevin singled to knock in Crosby.

Saint Martin's added an insurance run in the sixth after a Heather Ebner single to score Shelby Lawson. Ava Clark was hit by a pitch with one out to bring the tying run to the plate. Jami Obringer struck out swinging and Paisley Noyer grounded out to end the game.

Riley McGee (L, 5-4) pitched 3.2 innings and gave up three hits, two runs, with two strikeouts. Victoria Frias pitched 2.0 innings giving up six hits and one run. Lily Delamora pitched 0.1 inning and only surrendered one hit. Lauryn Bergevin led the Nighthawks with two hits and an RBI.

NNU falls to 20-11 overall and 1-3 in GNAC play. Their next game will be a four-game series against Simon Fraser (B.C.) on Friday and Saturday at Bobby Welch Halle Field in Nampa, Idaho.
