Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Anna Carter

Nighthawks Soar Past Nanooks with Dominant 84-43 Win

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team handled business in their game against the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks on January 3rd. Capitalizing on a stellar defensive performance the Nighthawks took home the 84-43 victory.

The Nighthawks move to 6-5 overall on the season and sit at 1-2 in conference.

Northwest Nazarene set the tone early in the opening quarter, using active defense and transition opportunities to build momentum. The Nighthawks offense was kick started with an early knocked down three from Allie Hueckman. The NNU team then forced multiple Alaska Fairbanks turnovers and capitalized with steady scoring inside from Trinidie Nichols, Hueckman, and Beaux Bruegman to stretch the lead.  Alaska Fairbanks found some success on the offensive glass and added a pair of baskets from Pearle Green and Tamai Mancuso, but NNU's pressure limited consistent scoring allowing them to establish an early advantage as the quarter closed, 22-9.

NNU kept the momentum rolling in the second quarter, leaning into its defensive pressure to stay in control. The Nighthawks forced a string of Alaska Fairbanks turnovers, with Kelly Garrity coming up with several steals that turned into quick scoring chances. Hadley Craig gave NNU a steady offensive spark, hitting jumpers and finishing at the rim, while Allie Hueckman continued to attack, adding points inside and from beyond the arc. Alaska Fairbanks looked for answers through outside shooting and extra possessions, but NNU's energy on both ends stifled many opportunities for the Nanooks. The half ended with the Nighthawks up, 46-19.

The Nighthaws stayed composed in the third quarter, answering Alaska Fairbanks' early energy with solid defense. Kendall Clark found opportunities in the paint helping to maintain the Nighthawks lead and Hueckman knocked down a timely three to keep the momentum going. Despite the lower scoring quarter the NNU team stayed in control heading into the fourth up 60-31.

The fourth quarter started with Nichols pulling down a defensive rebound, setting the tone for NNU's hustle on both ends. Bruegman and Claire Fischer controlled the paint with rebounds and blocks, keeping Alaska from gaining any momentum. Craig and Hueckman sparked the offense with jumpers and layups, while the Nighthawks turned steals into fast-break points. With 15 seconds remaining on the clock Nichols knocked down a basket behind the arc to seal the Nighthawks, 84-43 victory.

Allie Huechman led her team with a career high 27 points and 4 steals. Hadley Craig recorded 16 points and 6 rebounds. Followed by Trinidie Nichols who had 14 points.

The Nighthawks will return home next week to compete against Western Washington University. The game is scheduled for Thursday January 8th at 5:15 pm.
