Nighthawks Stay Hot, Defeating Simon Fraser 81-64

NAMPA, Idaho - The Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team put together a well-rounded, entertaining performance on Saturday, the 10th, as they squared off against the Simon Fraser Red Leafs. The Nighthawks controlled the tempo and maintained the lead for much of the contest, ultimately walking away with an 81-64 victory.

The Nighthawks move to 8-5 overall on the season and sit at 3-2 in conference.

The NNU offense found its rhythm early in the first quarter, with Kendall Clark scoring in the paint and Allie Hueckman knocking down a three within the opening two minutes. Both teams settled into a defensive battle, trading momentum on that end of the floor. The Red Leafs shot 9-of-19 from the field, while the Nighthawks went 8-of-15, but NNU found an edge beyond the arc and at the free-throw line. Consistent inside scoring from Clark, paired with a timely three from Kelly Garrity, helped the Nighthawks grind out a slim 20–19 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Nighthawks struggled to find their pace in the second quarter as SFU increased defensive pressure, forcing a handful of untimely turnovers. Trailing 30–25, Beaux Bruegman sparked a shift in momentum with a strong drive to the basket followed by a three-pointer on back-to-back possessions. Hadley Craig added to the surge with a three of her own, cutting the Red Leafs' lead to two. As the tempo slowed late in the quarter, scoring opportunities were hard to come by, but Garrity delivered again, drilling a clutch three to reclaim the lead. NNU headed into halftime on top, 41–36.

Coming out of halftime, the Nighthawks went to work extending their lead. Kendall Clark and Sadi Clemons remained a steady presence in the paint, anchoring the offense inside. With success coming at a faster pace, NNU pushed the tempo and moved the ball well, outscoring SFU 7–3 in fast-break points. As the Red Leafs were forced to collapse defensively, Trinidie Nichols and Kelly Garrity capitalized from beyond the arc, knocking down back-to-back threes. The Nighthawks carried a commanding 63–53 advantage into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter began with both teams trading defensive stops as Simon Fraser tried to cut into the Nighthawks' lead. Hueckman and Nichols pushed the pace, creating scoring chances, while Claire Fischer knocked down a key three to maintain NNU's edge. In the final minutes, Clark and Rylie Edlefsen controlled the boards, and Hadley Craig contributed crucial blocks, helping the Nighthawks close out the 81-64 victory.

Kendall Clark led her team with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Beaux Bruegman also contributed 14 points and Allie Hueckman had 12.

The Nighthawks travel to Billings next Thursday to compete against the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets at 5:15 pm.
