Nighthawks Defeat WOU, Build Momentum Towards GNAC Tournament

NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene University Women's Basketball team delivered a strong performance at home on Saturday, February 22, defeating Western Oregon 76-60. With this win, the Nighthawks improve to 10-7 in GNAC play and 16-10 overall.

Western Oregon and Northwest Nazarene battled through a competitive first quarter, with both teams trading early baskets. NNU struck first with a three-pointer from Kate Clark, but Western Oregon responded with a deep shot from Enid Vaifanua to tie it up. The Nighthawks briefly took the lead with a three from Danika Starr, but Western Oregon's Salma Youngblood knocked down a jumper in the final seconds to put WOU ahead 16-13.

Northwest Nazarene fought hard in the second quarter but struggled to convert key shots, allowing Western Oregon to edge ahead. Danika Starr and Chloe Deharo kept the Nighthawks in it with clutch free throws, but WOU responded with timely buckets, including two three pointers from Bella Pedrojetti. Despite strong rebounding from Madeline Gebers and Jené Wells, NNU's offense couldn't find its rhythm. A late three from Gebers tied the game, but Bella Pedrojetti immediately answered for WOU. The Nighthawks hit the locker rooms hoping to regroup down, 31-28. 


Coming out in the third quarter Northwest Nazarene dominated with key plays from Danika Starr and Chloe Deharo, who hit crucial shots to maintain their lead. Western Oregon tried to fight back with a three-pointer from Bella Pedrojetti, but NNU's defense held strong with steals from Jené Wells and Chloe Deharo. Madeline Gebers and Danika Starr controlled the paint, converting layups and securing rebounds. With the momentum on their side they looked to close the game in the fourth. 


The Nighthawks secured their victory in the fourth quarter as the Wolves struggled to keep their composure. NNU continued to put in buckets and held the WOU team defensively. At the four minute mark the Western Oregon team was given three technical fouls resulting in 6 free throws shot by Chloe Deharo who made 5 of them. Kendall Clark then sank a jumper to push the Nighthawks lead to 70-54. The game ended at the free throw line with the Nighthawks shooting 11-12 to secure their 76-60 victory.  


Stat Leaders 
The Nighthawks will host their final game of the season before the GNAC Championships on March 1st. They will compete against Central Washington at 1:00 pm in the Johnson Sports Center.
