SFU Downs NNU For Second Game in a Row

BURNABY, B.C. – Northwest Nazarene women's basketball wasn't able to enact revenge on Simon Fraser on Tuesday, falling to SFU for the second time in three days by a score of 90-79.

How It Happened

Just as they did in the first meeting between the squads last Saturday, Simon Fraser came out shooting well, gaining a 10-point advantage after the first quarter at 28-18.

NNU was able to cut into the deficit during the second quarter, as an Emma Clark layup made it a six-point game with 32 seconds before the half. However, SFU would hit a three just before the buzzer to go into the locker room up by nine, 48-39.

The Nighthawks would go on a run in the third, drawing to within two points, 59-57, on a Lydia Nieto triple at the 4:09 mark. SFU responded with seven-straight points, though, building their lead back up to nine, and would eventually take a seven-point advantage into the final period.

NNU once again started the quarter well as Teagan Thurman was a one-woman wrecking crew over the first five minutes. The forward scored eight of NNU's first 10 points in the period to bring the Nighthawks even with SFU, 74-74, with 5:25 remaining.

SFU was able to end the comeback attempt, however, only allowing one NNU basket and one free throw over the next five minutes as they went on a 15-3 run, eventually taking the 90-79 victory.

Nighthawks Notes

  • NNU falls to 13-8 on the season and 7-6 in GNAC play.
  • Teagan Thurman led the Nighthawks with a career-high 26 points, going 9-12 from the field and 7-10 from the free throw line.
  • Clare Eubanks was the only other Nighthawk in double figures with a season-high of 14.
  • Emma Clark added seven points and five steals.
  • Thurman led the team with four rebounds, while six other Nighthawks had three boards each.

Next Up

The Nighthawks have three more road games in the next seven days, visiting Saint Martin's on Thursday, Western Oregon on Saturday, and Western Washington on Monday.
