BILLINGS, Mont. – Northwest Nazarene softball continued their dominance of the GNAC on Friday, sweeping Montana State Billings by scores of 8-4 and 10-0.
With the wins, the Nighthawks improve to 27-9 on the year and 10-4 in the conference. NNU is very close to clinching the top overall seed for the GNAC tournament, and would do so with two more wins tomorrow regardless of what happens in the rest of the conference. Central Washington is the only team that can catch NNU, as they have four games to play this weekend and are two games back of the Nighthawks.
NNU and MSUB's final regular season doubleheader is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow in Billings.
Game One: NNU 8, MSUB 4
The Nighthawks didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard in the opener, tallying three runs in the top of the first. With the bases loaded,
Maia McNicoll brought home the first run on a single to right center.
Tori Hensley followed with another RBI single, and
Madison Strickler then walked in a run to make it 3-0.
From then on it was all
Ivy Hommel, as the shortstop tallied all five of the rest of the Nighthawks' RBI. She hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth, a run-scoring single in the fifth, and another two-run bomb in the seventh.
Sidney Booth started for NNU and went the distance in the circle, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out nine to improve to 13-2 on the year.
Hommel was a perfect 5-5 at the plate with two singles, a double, and two homers. Along with the five RBI, she also scored three times.
NNU totaled 18 hits, with all nine starters reaching base safely.
Emma Mulligan,
Brittany Genuardi, Booth, Hensley, and
Emilie Hernandez all had two-hit games for the Nighthawks.
Game Two: NNU 10, MSUB 0
Tori Hensley dominated the Yellowjackets from the circle in game two, only allowing a single to the leadoff batter before retiring every following MSUB hitter. She finished with six strikeouts and just the one hit allowed, only throwing 63 pitches.
NNU got on the board in the first inning for the second-straight game, with Genuardi driving in two on a double and then scoring on an RBI groundout from Booth.
The rest of NNU's runs came in the later innings, scoring four in the fifth and three in the sixth to end the game early.
McNicoll and
Nicole Zuvela were both 3-4 with an RBI in the game, while Hommel, Genuardi, and Booth each had two hits for the Nighthawks.
On the day, Hommel finished a blistering 7-8 from the plate in the two games.
