NNU Salvages Game Four at Western Oregon

MONMOUTH, Ore. - Northwest Nazarene softball was able to salvage game four of the series at Western Oregon 8-2 after falling 5-1 in game three.

NNU dropped both games of the series on Saturday, as the Wolves handed the Nighthawks their first series loss of the season. NNU moves to 18-6 on the year and 5-3 in GNAC play.

The Nighthawks have a bye from conference action next week, and will use that to travel south and take one a few PacWest foes. NNU will visit Academy of Art on Wednesday before taking on Dominican and Concordia Irvine in San Rafael over the weekend.

Game One: WOU 5, NNU 1

The Nighthawks struggled to get the offense going in game one, managing five hits and just the one run on an Emma Mulligan RBI single in the second inning. That tally tied the game at one apiece, but WOU scored once in the fourth and three times in the sixth to pull away for the win.

Jackie Vargas started in the circle for NNU, going 5.2 innings and allowing nine hits and five runs while striking out six. Gina Skinner entered and got the final out in the sixth for the Nighthawks.

Mulligan was a perfect 4-4 from the dish in the game, including a double and the one RBI. Madison Strickler recorded the only other hit for NNU.

Game Two: NNU 8, WOU 2

The first inning of game two didn't go as planned for NNU starter Sidney Booth, giving up a two-run homer with two outs. However, Booth would settle down tremendously from there, only allowing one more hit over the final six innings while striking out 12 and walking just one to get the win.

The score was close for most of the game, as NNU led just 3-2 heading into the final inning. Booth helped her cause with a solo homer in the second, Ivy Hommel notched an RBI double in the third, and McNicoll added a solo shot in the sixth for the lead.

The Nighthawks were finally able to put some distance between them and the Wolves in the top of the seventh, beginning with a sacrifice fly from Mulligan. Hommel then recorded her second RBI of the game with a single, and Brittany Genuardi followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2. Before the inning was over, Booth went deep again, this time for a two-run blast that put the Nighthawks up six and put the game out of reach.

Booth finished with two hits, both home runs, while Hommel and McNicoll also tallied two hits in the game.
