NAMPA, Idaho - The starters for Northwest Nazarene softball were nearly unhittable on Friday, as the Nighthawks gave up just five hits in a pair of shutouts over Whitworth, 4-0 and 8-0.
With the wins, NNU improves to 5-1. The Nighthawks and Pirates will face off for two more games tomorrow, with first pitch of game one at noon.
Game One - NNU 4, Whitworth 0
Sidney Booth was the story of game one, as the pitcher threw her second complete game shutout in just three starts this season. She allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out 10, with no runners advancing past second base.
The Nighthawks did their damage offensively in the first inning with three runs, and it would be more than enough to earn the victory alongside Booth's gem.
Emma Mulligan led off the inning with a walk, and then came all the way around to score on a double to deep left off the bat of
Ivy Hommel.
Brittany Genuardi then traded places with Hommel, knocking an RBI double to the fence in left center. Before the inning was over,
Madison Strickler added an RBI single to score Genuardi and make it 3-0.
NNU would tack on another run in the bottom of the sixth, with
Abigail Gagnon sending a sacrifice fly to center field to score Strickler from third.
Genuardi, Strickler, and
Madison Felter each tallied two hits for the Nighthawks.
Game Two - NNU 8, Whitworth 0 (five innings)
Tori Hensley picked up right where Booth left off for the second game, hurling a shutout of her own through five innings of work before NNU took the win via the eight-run rule.
Hensley allowed just three hits and no walks while striking out five. Whitworth didn't reach base through the first three innings, but all three of their hits came as singles in the fourth to load the bases with just one out. Hensley was able to escape the jam unscathed, though, as the next Pirate lined into a double play to retire the side.
NNU was held off the board in the first two innings, but jumped on Whitworth for five runs in the third. Hommel and Strickler both scored on errors to open the inning, followed by a pair of RBI singles from
Maia McNicoll and
Nicole Zuvela. Before the inning was over, Mulligan brought home McNicoll with a sacrifice fly to put the Nighthawks up 5-0.
NNU would add a run in the fourth, before ending the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Hommel notched an RBI double and then the game was finished when she scored on a pinch-hit single from
Audree Montmeny.
Hommel, McNicoll, Zuvela, and
Dominique Trevino all had two hits for the Nighthawks, while Whitworth wanted absolutely no piece of Genuardi as they walked the NNU slugger in all four of her plate appearances. Following today's games, Genuardi is now hitting .692 with five doubles, a homer, and nine RBI in just 13 official at-bats through the six games. She also has nine walks.
