Nighthawks Down Saints for Two More Wins

NAMPA, Idaho - Two more games, two more wins for Northwest Nazarene softball as they swept Friday's doubleheader against Saint Martin's by scores of 9-1 and 8-4.

With the wins, the Nighthawks are now 12-2 on the season and 2-0 in the GNAC, as this weekend's games are the conference openers.

NNU and SMU will close out the series with another doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon.

Game 1: NNU 9, SMU 1 (6 inn.)

Sidney Booth was up to her usual tricks, holding Saint Martin's to just one run on four hits while striking out seven and walking just one. Booth is now a perfect 6-0 on the mound this year.

At the plate, the Nighthawks were led by Maia McNicoll's 2-2 game, with both hits flying over the fence for home runs. She would finish with four RBI, two runs scored, and a walk. Madison Felter was 1-3 with a pair of RBI, and Booth was also 2-3 from the plate in addition to her dominance on the mound.

McNicoll got the fireworks going early, sending a three-run bomb out of the park in the bottom of the first inning. NNU's lead grew to 6-0 in the bottom of the second, as Felter drilled a two-RBI triple and scored on a single from Emma Mulligan.

After the Saints got on the board with a run in the top of the third, the Nighthawks got it right back in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot from McNicoll. NNU ended the game on the eight-run rule in the bottom of the sixth, as Brittany Genuardi drove in a run with a single and Mulligan scored on a wild pitch.

Game 2: NNU 8, SMU 4

Game two started in the Saints' favor, as they got to NNU starter Tori Hensley for two runs in the top of the first. The Nighthawks cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, with Booth bringing home Genuardi on an RBI single, and tied it up in the fourth with Madison Strickler scoring on an error.

NNU's bats would come alive in the fifth, as McNicoll blasted her third home run of the day. It was also her second three-run shot, bringing home Booth and Dominique Trevino to give the Nighthawks a 5-2 lead.

The Nighthawks got two more in the sixth as Booth powered a two-run shot over the fence in right-center. SMU would get two runs back on a homer in the top of the seventh, but NNU got out of the inning after that to take the 8-4 win.

Hensley wound up with the win for NNU, improving to 4-1 on the year after allowing four runs on six hits while striking out three. Jackie Vargas entered with one out in the seventh and was able to get the final two outs to end the game without allowing another run to cross the plate.

Booth was 3-4 with three RBI to lead NNU in game two. McNicoll had just one hit, but it was a big one with the three-run homer. Ivy Hommel, Genuardi, and Nicole Zuvela each added two hits in the nightcap.
