NNU softball swept by Western Washington

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Northwest Nazarene softball team ran into two good pitchers Saturday as they were swept by Western Washington in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader.

The Nighthawks (8-8 overall, 1-3 GNAC) lost the opener 4-0 and the nightcap 6-0. The Nighthawks offense struggled throughout the doubleheader, managing just one hit in both games.

"Our pitchers did a great job today giving us an opportunity to get back into games," NNU coach Rich Wagner said. "We didn't make the adjustment offensively to get anything rolling. I know all 22 girls will put the work in this week to get where we need to be."

In the opener, freshman Sidney Booth took a perfect game into the fifth inning, but allowed two runs to take the hard luck loss. On offense, she had the lone Nighthawks hit, while Maia McNicoll drew a walk and Ivy Hommel was hit by a pitch.

In the nightcap, McNicoll took the loss allowing three runs on just one hit in 2.1 innings pitched. Jackie Vargas gave up three runs – one earned – in 3.2 innings of relief.

Offensively, Booth again had the lone hit, finishing 1-for-2 with a walk. Emma Mulligan also drew a walk.

NNU is back on the road next week, traveling to Concordia for another four-game set.
