Nighthawks bounce back with decisive victory

NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team got back to what it does best – high-energy defense and transition offense.

The Nighthawks rolled past Alaska on Saturday, winning 93-72 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action. It was especially satisfying after losing 68-54 to Alaska Anchorage on Thursday.

"These past two days we've been talking about playing our game and being up tempo," sophomore Erin Jenkins said. "We wanted to bring energy on defense and that translates to offense. Once we got that going, we felt good tonight. We felt like ourselves."

NNU (16-6 overall, 11-3 GNAC) forced 24 turnovers, had five players score in double figures and every player who saw time scored.

"We didn't shoot well from 3, but that didn't hurt us because of our defense," NNU coach Steve Steele said. "We did a better job of letting our defense create offense, which is what we were hoping to do Thursday night. We made some good adjustments and it is nice to see us share the ball and spread the scoring around."

Jenkins scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed five rebounds. Haley Hanson had a career-high 15 points, making 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.

"We definitely kicked the ball up the floor a lot more and my teammates were finding me at the right time," Hanson said. "Hopefully that builds my confidence, so that in bigger games like Anchorage or Western Washington, I'll be hitting shots for my team."

It was only the second time this season Hanson has scored in double digits, which was a surprise to Steele.

"It's funny, because probably nobody in our locker room would know that," Steele said. "We all know what kind of scorer she is. She can really put the ball in the basket and maybe we did a better job of finding her tonight. She also did a good job of getting to good spots and calling for the ball."

Clare Eubanks added 12 points, McKenna Emerson had 11 points and six rebounds, Avery Albrecht had 10 points and eight rebounds and Marina Valles had seven points, five assists and four rebounds.

The Nighthawks used a 17-4 run midway through the third quarter to blow the game wide open, leading by as many as 30.

With the win, the Nighthawks remain tied for second place in the league standings with Simon Fraser. Western Washington fell a game back, losing to Saint Martin's on Saturday.

NNU hits the road to play at Western and Simon Fraser next week.

"We just need to play our game like we did tonight," Jenkins said. "Have to have defensive energy and once we translate our defense into offense, we get excited and that really helps."

Jocelyn Gandara's 18 points and nine rebounds led Alaska (5-17, 2-12).
