Nighthawks split final day at Courtyard Classic

SAINT GEORGE, Utah – Northwest Nazarene senior Brittany Genuardi added to her career home run record, blasting a grand slam Saturday as the Nighthawks split their final two games at the Dixie State Courtyard Classic.

NNU defeated Fort Lewis 11-0 in five innings after losing 9-8 to MSU Denver earlier in the day.

In the victory, Genuardi was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, six RBIs a double and the grand slam.

"We did a great job having good at bats again today," NNU coach Rich Wagner said. "The girls made offensive adjustments all day. They are looking forward to a day off and then a great matchup Monday against Dixie State."

Maia McNicoll and Madison Strickler were both 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, while Mckenzie Oakes also drove in a run.

Pitcher Tori Hensley earned the victory, tossing four shutout innings on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Ashlee Schriever threw a scoreless inning in relief.

In the opener, NNU (7-3 overall) trailed 9-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh but scored five times and had the bases loaded when the game ended.

"I'm super proud of how this team battled today," Wagner said. "We had a chance to win and all 22 of our girls believed we could win and that is fun."

In the seventh, Sidney Booth drove in a run on a bases loaded hit by pitch. Madison Felter then hit a run-scoring infield single and Strickler reached on a fielder's choice to make it 9-6. Rae Young then hit a two-out single for another run and Emma Mulligan was hit by a pitch to drive in another run. Ivy Hommel then struck out to end the game.

Felter was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Genuardi was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Booth was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Booth allowed three runs on six hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in four innings, taking a no decision. Jackie Vargas suffered the loss allowing four runs – three earned – on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts.

NNU will stay in Utah to face Dixie State in a doubleheader at 12 p.m. Monday.
