Underclassmen, Valles deliver huge plays in OT victory

BURNABY, B.C. – The West Gymnasium on Simon Fraser's campus has been a bit of a horror show for the Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team in recent years.

Until Saturday.

The Nighthawks pulled out a 99-91 overtime victory despite having three starters foul out with lots of time left. NNU got significant contributions from its freshmen, plus sophomore Jordan Pinson made four clutch free throws.

To cap it off, senior point guard Marina Valles scored a career-high 24 points and crossed the 1,000-point plateau.

"We had four freshmen on the court for most of the fourth quarter and almost all of overtime and they just didn't panic," NNU coach Steve Steele said. "We talked about not playing not to lose, but to get after them. And they did in close situations they made plays, they knocked down free throws and they got organized on defense and were aggressive."

The Nighthawks (18-6 overall, 13-3 GNAC) had lost six of their last seven games in British Columbia, including on a late 3-pointer last season that ruined NNU's 17-0 start.

This time, though, thanks to Valles and huge minutes by Haley Hanson, Emma Clark, Clare Eubanks and Nicole Gall, the Nighthawks got the victory.

"It was huge," Valles said. "They did not play like freshmen. They had so much confidence and stayed calm all throughout the game."

Albrecht fouled out with 3:22 left in regulation, Jenkins followed with 1:50 left and Emerson went to the bench with 3:45 remaining in OT.

Despite the youth on the floor, the Nighthawks opened overtime on a 5-0 run as Clark made two free throws, Eubanks made one and Valles two for an 86-81 lead.

After a Simon Fraser layup, Valles scored on a putback and Hanson split a pair of free throws and Pinson hit two to make it 91-83.

The Clan, though, had been making 3-pointers at will it seemed at the end of regulation and in overtime.

Jessica Jones sank a 3-pointer, then Eubanks made two free throws and Tayler Drynan hit a 3-pointer to make it 93-89 with 37 seconds to play.

Pinson, though, calmly stepped to the line and sank two more free throws, followed by two from Valles and Gall.

It added up to a humongous road win.

"It is so tough to play here. It is packed and really, really loud," Steele said. "I think this was a case where being young helped us because they don't know about the nightmares we've had here, but that is obviously a big win and a really, really huge road trip."

NNU defeated Western Washington on Thursday and has won three in a row since losing to Alaska Anchorage.

The Nighthawks appeared to win the game at the end of regulation as Valles drove the length of the court and hit a tough floater with 1.4 seconds to go for an 81-79 lead. After a Clan timeout moved the ball into their half of the court, Ozioma Nwabuko scored on an alley-oop layup as time expired to send it to overtime.

Valles added five rebounds to go along with her 24 points, while Jenkins had 20 points, Albrecht 13 points and seven rebounds. Pinson finished with nine points and three assists, Eubanks had seven points and eight rebounds and Hanson had seven points.

"I did not expect to score this many points at all," Valles said of becoming the 29th woman to reach 1,000 points at NNU. "I am happy about it, especially in tonight's circumstances."

Jessica Jones scored a game-high 32 points to lead Simon Fraser (16-10, 11-5).

The Nighthawks took a 70-55 lead on a Hanson 3-pointer with 7:16 left, but free throws and outside shooting by the Clan got them back in it.

Simon Fraser made 11-of-12 free throws at one point to pull within 76-75, but three free throws by Valles made it 79-76 with 13 seconds remaining.

After a timeout, Jones hit a long 3-pointer to tie the game, setting up Valles' length of the court layup at the other end.
