LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The Northwest Nazarene softball program has a new home run queen.
Senior
Brittany Genuardi hit two home runs Friday to become the all-time leader in home runs for the Nighthawks.
NNU went 2-1 at the Desert Stinger softball tournament hosted by Montana State Billings in Las Vegas, losing to No. 6 UC San Diego 8-5 in the opener, defeating Dominican 21-5 in the second game and winning 11-6 against West Texas A&M in the nightcap.
"It's been a great day and we are playing with a lot of energy," NNU coach
Rich Wagner said. "All 22 girls are playing really, really well, which creates for a fun environment. The focus is just playing as a team."
Genuardi set the record in the opener, blasting a two-run shot in the top of the third against San Diego to give the Nighthawks a 4-0 lead. It was the 26th home run of her career, breaking a tie with
Kylie Orr who graduated last year.
Her home run was one of six the Nighthawks hit on the day.
Freshman
Emma Mulligan homered in the first NNU at bat of the season, while Genuardi,
Abigail Gagnon and
Maia McNicoll went deep in the second game.
Gagnon's homer was a grand slam as the Nighthawks pummeled Dominican for 22 hits, as well as 13 runs in the sixth inning as they won by mercy rule.
"Game 2 was impressive and hitting was contagious in that game," Wagner said. "It was fun to watch and we are trying to build off of it."
Genuardi was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the opener, while
Ivy Hommel was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Rae Young was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Against Dominican, Genuardi was 3-for-3 with five RBIs, Gagnon was 3-for-4 with five RBIs, McNicoll was 2-for-3 with two RBIs,
Taylor Butterfield was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two doubles, Hommel was 2-for-2 with two rbis,
Emma Longoria was 2-for-4 and
Emilie Hernandez was 2-for-5 with three runs scored.
Young earned the win in the circle, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings. She threw less than inning last year, suffering an arm injury in her only appearance.
In the nightcap, NNU jumped out to an 8-0 lead before West Texas A&M had even come to bat twice.
Mulligan led off with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Freshman
Sidney Booth then hit a two-run homer for a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the second, Genuardi and
Madison Felter each walked with the bases loaded and then Booth hit a two-run single. Felter eventually came around on a wild pitch for an 8-0 lead.
Booth then made the lead stand up in the circle with some help from
Ashley Bliss, with McNicoll coming on for the save.
Booth finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs, as well as pitching 4 2/3 innings. Bliss earned the win, getting an out in relief. Hommel was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, Genuardi was 1-for-2 with two runs, an RBI and a double, and Mulligan was 1-for-5 with three runs scored.
NNU faces Sonoma State at 12:30 p.m. MST and Cal State San Bernardino at 3 p.m. MST on Saturday.
