NAMPA, Idaho –
Lexi Tubbs has been a part of many winning basketball teams in her career.
The one she joined in February, though, is one of the best ever.
The 2018 Northwest Nazarene graduate doesn't suit up, dribble, shoot 3-pointers or even interact in person with the players.
But Tubbs has certainly enjoyed her seven months working for the Seattle Storm front office.
"You walk in the doors of the office and the championship trophies are right there," she said. "Right away it's like, this is the real deal. Everyone carries themselves differently here. We are not building, we expect success and championships. It's really cool. It's next level."
The Storm swept the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA championship series on Tuesday night, winning their fourth title and second in three years.
The shortened season and playoffs took place in a bubble in Bradenton, Florida, which left Tubbs on the outside looking in.
In fact, Tubbs has only stepped foot in the Storm's offices once. For an interview.
The night before she was supposed to begin her work as an executive assistant to Alisha Valavanis, the general manager and CEO, she received a text at 9 p.m. moving her start date back a week to March 9 as the team tried to figure out how to handle the surging COVID-19 pandemic.
The next week, she again received a message telling her to not come into the office.
"Alisha called me and told me the game plan," Tubbs said. "She had it all laid out for me. She still wanted me to start and still needed me, but in a little different capacity."
Tubbs graduated in 2018 with a degree in marketing and earned a Master's in Business Administration in 2019. She played basketball for the Nighthawks for four years and ran for the indoor track and field team as well. She finished third in program history in 3-pointers made and won GNAC Indoor Track and Field titles in the 60-meter hurdles in 2017 and 2019.
Tubbs worked for the NNU admissions department from 2018 to the end of 2019 before moving to the Seattle area to be with her fiancé, Logan Wood.
Wood's brother-in-law sent her a job listing on LinkedIn that was looking for people willing to work in the Seattle sports industry.
Tubbs applied and went through three rounds of interviews before being told the job was with the Storm.
"When I found out I was like, 'no way,'" she said. "It's been pretty cool to be a part of this world."
Tubbs does everything an executive assistant normally would do, like scheduling and calendar stuff, but she has also been heavily involved in the organization's social media campaigns around Black Lives Matter, Breonna Taylor and
Say Her Name.
"I'm hearing from the Seahawks, Mariners and Seattle city government," she said. "Working on the projects that comprise all of the league's social justice projects has been super intriguing to me."
And while Tubbs never imagined she'd be an executive assistant, she let it be known in her job interviews that she has a hunger and desire to move up the ladder.
"Having them hear that I want to work in marketing or sales or something like that definitely helped (me get the job)," she said. "I'm in this for the long run. I want to move up in this organization."
