GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Northwest Nazarene's
Henry Bernard had the first bogey-free round of his collegiate career Monday, shooting a 69 in the first round of the Mustang Intercollegiate at Palm Valley Golf Club.
He shot a 76 in the second round to put him in a tie for 51st at 145 strokes. Teammate
Justin Higgins shot a 75 in the first round and then a 1-under-par 71 in the second and is tied for 57th.
"Henry made 15 pars and three birdies, including a chip-in on the last hole to save par," NNU coach
Craig Stensgaard said. "It was even sweeter as his parents and grandmother made the trip to Arizona to watch him this week."
As a team, the Nighthawks shot 301 and 303 and are in 23rd place, just seven shots behind conference foe Montana State Billings for 21st.
"Our team strokes are about five strokes higher than what we had set as our scoring goal, so we will talk about that and try and hit that mark tomorrow," Stensgaard said. "The guys were pretty tired. With a field this big it made for an 11-hour day on the course and it was 98 degrees."
The field includes eight teams ranked in the top 50 in the country and a team score of even par would only be good for 16th place. Colorado School of Mines leads the tournament at 555 strokes, while Western Washington's Ethan Castro leads the individual scoring with a 132.
Also for the Nighthawks,
Drew Lunt shot a 151 and is tied for 97th,
Jared Stensgaard shot a 162 and is in 118th,
Andrew Cortez shot a 168 and is in 119th and
Isaac Emerson, playing as an individual, shot a 148 and is tied for 77th.
The tournament concludes with a single round Tuesday.
