Adams dominant as Nighthawks earn split

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Northwest Nazarene starter Jordan Adams was dominant Saturday as the Nighthawks earned a GNAC doubleheader split with Western Oregon.

Adams (11-4) pitched a four-hit shutout with one walk and six strikeouts as NNU won the opener 1-0. The Wolves won the nightcap 7-0.

The Nighthawks (19-18 overall, 8-8 GNAC) scored their run in the top of the first after Anna Williams was hit by a pitch, went to second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch. She then scored on a Kylie Orr single.

That was all Adams needed to get the victory.

"Jordan did a great job commanding the zone today," NNU coach Rich Wagner said. "Defensively, we played well all day. One inning didn't go our way in Game 2, but the girls did a great job battling."

Cassidy Fifield added a double, while Shelbie Martinez, Rae Young and Anna Olson all had singles as NNU had just five hits in the victory.

In the nightcap, Western Oregon (20-11, 8-6) scored all seven of its runs in the fourth inning.

NNU struggled offensively, managing just three hits in the game. Fifield and Martinez each had doubles and Young added a single.

Rylee Thomas took the loss in relief of starter Ashlee Schriever.

NNU returns home for the final three weekends of regular-season play. The Nighthawks remain in fifth place in the GNAC. The top four teams advance to the conference tournament.

"Conference is going to be a close race to the end," Wagner said. "Getting a split on the road this weekend will help us continue to close the gap. We are excited to play at home in front of our fans the rest of the way out."

NNU hosts Saint Martin's in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Friday.
