Thomas, defense shine as NNU one win from postseason

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NAMPA, Idaho – Northwest Nazarene senior Rylee Thomas had all of her pitches working Friday.

She dominated Western Washington, shutting the Vikings out for the first time this year as NNU moved within one win of a playoff berth.

The Nighthawks (26-21 overall, 15-11 GNAC) split the doubleheader, winning the opener 7-0 before dropping the nightcap 8-2.

"As a senior it's one of my last weekends and last games on the field," she said. "I wanted to go out, have fun and not let anything affect me."

NNU needs just one win Saturday to clinch a second consecutive berth in the GNAC Championships as the Nighthawks hold the tiebreaker on the Vikings.

Thomas allowed just three hits with one walk and four strikeouts. She also got some sterling defense behind her as Anna Williams had two nice diving catches in left field, Anna Olson made a great play ranging to her right in the hole and Abigail Otto made a ridiculous diving grab on a liner.

"I love having them behind me," said Thomas, who won her fourth straight start. "I trust them 100 percent."

Shelbie Martinez got the offense going in the opener, hitting a two-out single in the first to score two runs. Kylie Orr had a two-run double and Williams had a two-run triple.

"I have just been working really hard focusing up the middle," Martinez said. "And I just wanted to have fun. It's our last weekend out here."

Martinez finished 2-for-3 with the two RBIs, while Williams was 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, Orr was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Cassidy Fifield was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

In the nightcap, Western Washington scored five runs in the top of the fourth taking advantage of three errors.

"I think we played a great game all around the first game," NNU coach Rich Wagner said. "I don't think we did a bad job in the second game, pitching or offensively. They just went to small ball and we weren't ready for it and made a couple of miscues.

"Defensively we have to be ready for that. We make a play here or there and it's a completely different game."

Fifield finished 2-for-4, while Orr and Lauren Bassett drove in NNU's runs.

Jordan Adams took the loss allowing six runs – one earned – on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

"We just have to come out play our game, have fun and enjoy the moment," Martinez said of Saturday's games. "We have nothing else to lose, so let's do it."
