Letter to My Freshman Self: Justin Higgins

| By:
Dear Freshman Justin,

Golf has been a talent that you have been blessed with over the last six years of your life, and up to this point, athletics is the only thing you have known. Being blessed with a talent as such might not seem like a big responsibility but stepping into a college program will be a completely different experience that you will savor for the rest of your life. Not only will your attendance at a Christian school mold your spiritual life, it will also transform the relationships you develop while at school and place an importance on intentionality within those relationships.

As you begin to travel with the team throughout your four years, embrace every challenge, every setback, and every opportunity with an open mind as this will allow you to be far more successful in the latter part of your college career and your professional career to follow. Golf is a marvelous gift but remember that it is simply a vehicle that has gotten you to where you are today.

Growing up playing baseball, basketball and golf, athletics have been the focal point of your life, which isn't bad in and of itself. However, with how much time is devoted in the gym, on the course, and in the class room, don't ever place athletics above the One who gave you it all. The glory for the achievements and accomplishments you will receive are simply another vehicle to help shine the light of the Lord to those in the darkness.

Lastly, remember to have fun and enjoy the moment. Time truly does not slow down for anyone and the next four years are going to be over before they even begin. Set plenty of goals to achieve on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis for all aspects of your life, as this will help guide you down the right paths of life. You will make mistakes and have some bumps along the way, but do not let these moments define who you will become. Remember this:

"Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you" - Deut. 31:6 (NIV)

With great care,

Senior Justin
