Nighthawks bounce back with big win

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team bounced back from a tough loss by rolling past Alaska 98-58 on Saturday in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season finale for both teams.

Avery Albrecht scored a team-high 19 points and was one of six players in double figures for NNU, which lost at Alaska Anchorage on Thursday night.

"I'm very happy with how they responded because it was really a heartbreaking loss. We put a lot into that game," NNU coach Steve Steele said. "It's nice to be able to respond because it is such a tough road trip. This is the only place you have to fly between cities, the weather is harsh – it was 5-below at shoot around this morning – and we didn't get to practice in their gym yesterday.

"Given all those things, I'm happy with the way they responded."

The game was tied 10-10 with 5 minutes, 50 seconds remaining in the first quarter when the Nighthawks (26-2 overall, 18-2 GNAC) went on a 21-0 run to blow it open.

Marina Valles opened it up with a pair of layups, Danielle Jardine had a pair of layups sandwiched around an Erin Jenkins jumper and Maya Rodgers made two free throws for a 22-10 lead after the first quarter.

Zoe Wessels opened the second quarter with two layups and two free throws and Albrecht capped it with a 3-pointer for a 31-10 lead with 7:51 left in the half.

"It's always nice to win big on the road," Steele said. "Zoe had a career-high tonight, so I was happy for her."

Wessels finished with 10 points, while Rodgers and Valles each had 12, and McKenna Walker and Jardine added 10 each. Ellie Logan had seven points and five rebounds.

Marian Wamsley's 20 points and six rebounds led Alaska (4-22, 1-19).

NNU will have at least the No. 2 seed to the GNAC tournament next weekend in Bellingham, Wash. If Central Washington upsets Anchorage in a game late Saturday, the Nighthawks would split the conference title but likely remain the No. 2 seed based on tiebreakers.
