Adams, Williams lead Nighthawks to split

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, Utah – A day after throwing the second no-hitter in school history, Jordan Adams wasn't quite as sharp but it was still good enough to earn the win.

Adams struck out six in seven solid innings as the Northwest Nazarene softball team defeated Western New Mexico 4-1 at the Courtyard Classic Dixie State Softball Tournament. NNU lost its second game Friday, falling 6-2 to Metro State Denver.

"Jordan threw really well again," NNU coach Rich Wagner said. "She threw a changeup away and their best hitter hit it out. It was a nice piece of hitting. Other than that, Jordan was really good again."

Adams didn't allow a hit until two outs in the third, which gave her 10 consecutive innings of no-hit ball dating back to her first start of the season last week. That's the longest no-hitter streak in the GNAC since Humboldt State's Lizzy Prescott threw two no-hitters in a row in 2006.

Adams gave up a solo home run in the fourth inning, which is the first run she's allowed in 18 innings this season. That tied the game at 1-1, but Anna Williams blasted her third home run of the season – a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth to give the Nighthawks (5-2 overall) the lead for good.

"Anna is always going to be the spark plug," Wagner said. "She is always going to hit well and hit consistently all year."

Abigail Otto was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while Ivy Hommel and Maia McNicoll each drove in runs.

In the nightcap, the Nighthawks fell behind 5-1 after five innings but had chances to rally.

They loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but managed just a run-scoring fielder's choice by pinch hitter Brittany Genuardi to make it 5-2.

In the seventh, they again loaded the bases, this time with two outs, but Anna Olson popped out to end the game. Both Kylie Orr and Genuardi were out of the starting lineup, which took away two big bats.

"We hit the ball hard to the left side of their infield all night long," Wagner said. "Their third baseman played a good game. It could have gone the other way. We put ourselves in position to win multiple times and that is all you can ask for. Those balls will bounce our way next game."

Hommel finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, Madison Strickler was 1-for-2 with a run scored and Otto and Fifield each added a hit.

Rylee Thomas took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs – three earned – on eight hits with no walks and two strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings pitched.

NNU has one more game left in the tournament, facing Fort Lewis at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
