Strong defense, balanced scoring leads NNU women

LACEY, Wash. – Three players scored in double figures and everyone on the roster scored as the No. 7 Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team defeated Saint Martin's 70-43 on Thursday in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

Avery Albrecht had a game-high 21 points, Marina Valles had 14 points, seven rebounds, four steals and four assists, and Danielle Jardine had 12 points and nine rebounds.

"To go on the road and get a win like that is always good," NNU coach Steve Steele said. "I know (Saint Martin's) record doesn't show it, but they are a very talented team and well coached."

The Nighthawks (20-1 overall, 12-1 GNAC) jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter, outscoring the Saints 25-9, but then struggled a bit over the next two quarters.

The Saints even outscored the Nighthawks 18-10 in the third, pulling within 51-38 late in the third quarter. NNU then went on a 10-1 run to end the threat of a comeback.

Jordan Pinson started it with two free throws, McKenna Walker hit a 3-pointer, Valles had a free throw, Jardine a layup and Valles capped it with a layup for a 61-39 lead with 6:14 to go.

"They made some really good adjustments at halftime and we didn't handle that well," Steele said. "We did a good job of turning it around in the fourth quarter. To hold them to 43 points even with that third quarter, that is a pretty good night on the defensive side."

NNU held Saint Martin's (5-16, 3-10) to just 25 percent shooting (16 of 64) from the field and 0-for-11 from beyond the 3-point line.

The Nighthawks shot 41.4 percent (24 of 58) and outrebounded the Saints 51-33.

NNU heads to Seattle Pacific at 2 p.m. Saturday, barring travel issues with a large winter storm that has been forecast for the Seattle area.
