Jordan Adams vs WOU

Adams throws second no-hitter in school history

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, Utah – Jordan Adams was only supposed to throw four innings Thursday.

The Northwest Nazarene sophomore has been limited in the early going this year by a sprain in her back, but the way she was going against Colorado State Pueblo there was no way she was coming out of the game.

Adams threw a no-hitter in a 9-0 win, striking out seven and walking one. It was just the second no-hitter in program history, matching Trisha DeSimone, who threw a five-inning perfect game against Walla Walla in 2005.

"It's so cool because it is a total team experience," she said. "I couldn't have done it without my fielders and my catcher calling the game. They all bailed me out and really helped me achieve that win."

The Nighthawks (4-1 overall) won their other game of the day, 7-6 in eight innings against Chadron State at the Courtyard Classic hosted by Dixie State.

Adams allowed just one baserunner on a close ball four call, but otherwise was brilliant. She even weathered a 90-minute delay as the frost melted, causing the infield to become too muddy to play.

"We wanted her to go four so that the rest of the staff could get through the day," NNU coach Rich Wagner said. "She just didn't want to come out. She said she felt good. That mental toughness that is being shown right now with all of the girls is fun to watch. They are not going to give up. They are going to grind."

Adams thinks she only threw one no-hitter in high school, but against top competition at the NCAA Division II level is much different. It is just the 24th no-hitter in GNAC history and only the fifth by a single pitcher going seven innings.

"I'm not upset about the walk," she said of the umpire's call. "It was too low. I think that is good for me because I have to hold myself to a high standard if I want to get better."

Adams was the GNAC freshman of the year and pitcher of the year last season and has yet to allow a run this season.

While Adams is a known quantity in the circle, freshman Ashlee Schriever had a performance for the ages as well in the nightcap against Chadron State.

Because of a series of offensive moves, the Nighthawks were left with no pitchers who had warmed up heading to the top of the eighth of a tie game.

Schriever got the standard five pitches at the start of the inning, then induced a wild double play.

Softball extra innings begin with a runner on second. The Chadron State batter bunted and the lead runner was thrown out at third. Cassidy Fifield backed up second base from center field and NNU threw out the batter at second for a quick two outs.

After an error allowed the next runner to reach, Schriever induced a fly out to center field.

"We are going to compete and battle to the end," Wagner said. "They weren't OK with losing that game. They got knocked down and got right back up."

For Schriever to perform her heroics, the offense had work of its own to do.

NNU trailed 5-1 after the top of the fifth, but scored once in the fifth and once in the sixth. The Nighthawks trailed 6-3 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

With Anna Williams at second, Abigail Otto hit a two-run homer to make it 6-5. Martinez then doubled and was lifted for pinch runner Emma Longoria.

Due up was freshman Maia McNicoll and Wagner decided to use senior Rae Young as a pinch hitter.

Young came through with the hit to tie the game, but because of an injury Young is not available to pitch right now.

Which set the stage for Schriever.

The Nighthawks are scheduled to play two games Friday in Utah, facing Western New Mexico at 3 p.m. and Metro State at 5:30 p.m.
