NNU softball swept by No. 17 Dixie State

SAINT GEORGE, Utah – The Northwest Nazarene softball team was swept by Dixie State on Monday in a nonconference doubleheader, falling 6-4 in the opener and 13-1 in five innings in the nightcap.

The Nighthawks (5-5 overall) appeared to have the opener in hand, leading 4-3 in the sixth inning with two outs and ace Jordan Adams in the circle.

But an infield single and a throwing error allowed the tying run to score and then Kori Gahn hit a two-run homer to left center for the 6-4 lead.

"Two plays at first base could've gone either way and neither went our way," NNU coach Rich Wagner said. "It created some adversity. If one of those plays go our way, we win that game."

Adams struck out 11 in six innings while suffering her first loss of the season.

Kylie Orr was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Anna Williams was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

In the nightcap, an eight-run fourth inning sunk the hopes of a comeback from a then-5-1 deficit.

Madison Strickler was 1-for-2 with an RBI triple, while Williams, Abigail Otto, Ivy Hommel and Anna Olson all had one hit each.

"I felt like our offensive approach was really good, but they are a good team," Wagner said. "Those are the two best pitchers we will face this year and the best team we have played this year."

The Nighthawks are off this weekend before opening their home slate on Friday, Feb. 22 against Menlo College.
