Logan, Wessels' career nights lead Nighthawks

NAMPA, Idaho – Ellie Logan couldn't miss, Zoe Wessels provided a big spark off the bench and the Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team rolled to another victory.

NNU defeated Montana State Billings 102-75 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game Saturday at the Johnson Sports Center.

Logan tied her career-high of 29 points, shooting a cooking 11-of-14 from the field. Wessels was perfect from the field, finishing with eight points and two steals.

"I just try to be really good at my role and do what my coach and teammates want me to do," Wessels said. "Honestly, it's all because of my teammates. They get me open and they get me the ball."

Logan said she didn't even realize she was having such a big night as she had a lot of putbacks and layups.

Her teammates and coaches certainly noticed her performance, though.

"Nobody's surprised. She can have that kind of night any night," NNU coach Steve Steele said. "She hit a 3 also, which is nice to see. She has actually been shooting the 3 really well in practice. Teams haven't traditionally guarded her out there, but when he hit her 3, the girl who wasn't guarding her looked at her coach and was like, 'Now what?'

"If she is hitting that, you have no chance of stopping her. She always plays that hard, but it is nice to see her get a little bit of a statistical reward for that."

NNU (16-0 overall, 8-0 GNAC) is one of just five undefeated teams in the country and is ranked No. 4 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association national poll and No. 2 in the D2SIDA poll.

On Saturday, they started slow falling behind 9-2. The Nighthawks eventually trailed 18-14 before going on a 22-3 run over the end of the first quarter and the start of the second.

"They were hitting everything and we were a step slow in halfcourt defense," Logan said. "Once we got going on our press and flying around and we got back to being ourselves, we had success."

Logan had 12 points and Erin Jenkins five during the streak. Jenkins saw her biggest minutes in recent weeks after missing a pair of games with an injury and only playing five minutes in the win Tuesday at Central Washington.

NNU forced 23 turnovers, scoring 34 points off of them. The Nighthawks shot 53.7 percent from the field to continue their strong play as they near the halfway mark of the conference schedule.

"I don't even have to play and it's fun," Wessels said. "I'd rather play, but it is so much fun and the atmosphere – it's like a bunch of best friends playing street ball. We are so unselfish. I love it."

That was never more evident than in the second half when Wessels had a steal near halfcourt and went coast-to-coast for a layup. The bench exploded with joy.

"A long time ago, I used to be a high school basketball player who used to go coast-to-coast," she said. "This is a higher level, though, and I don't get to do that very often. I saw it and anticipated it and went for it. It was fun."

Avery Albrecht finished with 11 points and five rebounds, Marina Valles had 11 points, five assists and four steals, Maya Rodgers had 10 points, Jenkins finished with seven points, five rebounds and three assists and Danielle Jardine had seven points.

Taylor Cunningham's 16 points led the Yellowjackets (7-7, 3-5).

NNU hits the road next week to wrap up the first half of GNAC play with games Thursday and Saturday at Western Washington and Simon Fraser, respectively.
