Box Score 2 BILLINGS, Mont. – The Northwest Nazarene University softball team will have to wait a day to celebrate a potential Great Northwest Athletic Conference title.
The Nighthawks (27-20 overall, 18-8 GNAC) won their opener Friday 6-0 before dropping the nightcap 6-5. NNU needs to win just one game Saturday to clinch at least a split of the regular-season title. They can win the title outright with a sweep or one win and a Central Washington loss.
"The girls are fighting and battling every inning and that is fun to watch," NNU coach
Rich Wagner said. "We did a good job making adjustments in the first game. I think we need to do a better job as a team making offensive adjustments in Game 2.
In the opener,
Jordan Adams was flat dominant. The freshman pitcher finished one out from a no-hitter, striking out 15 in the victory.
Cassidy Fifield hit a solo home run and
Kylie Orr was 3-for-4 with a run and a double. She also set the career hits record for NNU in the win.
"Jordan came within one pitch of a no-hitter," Wagner said, "it doesn't get much better than that."
In the nightcap, Orr hit two home runs and drove in five runs but Billings scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to steal the victory.
The two teams play again in a doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m.
