NNU softball sets single-season wins record

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PORTLAND, Ore. – The Northwest Nazarene University softball team set the single-season wins record Friday, sweeping a doubleheader with Concordia University.

The Nighthawks won the opener 8-0 in five innings and the nightcap 5-2 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

"Today was a team effort and everyone did their part," NNU coach Rich Wagner said. "Jordan (Adams) and Rylee (Thomas) did a great job in the circle. They both gave us an opportunity to win."

NNU (24-19 overall, 15-7 GNAC) won 23 games last season and in 2006. This is only the fifth time the Nighthawks have won at least 17 games in a season since the program began in 2002.

In the opener, Abigail Otto was 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and three RBIs. Brittany Genuardi was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs and Kylie Orr had an RBI double.
Adams struck out seven in five scoreless innings to win her 14th game of the season.

In the nightcap, Orr drove in two runs, while Cassidy Fifield, Anna Olson and Lauren Bassett all had RBIs as the Nighthawks scored five runs in the second.

Thomas earned her second consecutive victory, allowing two runs on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

"Our offense did a good job in the first game, winning the game-changing moments," Wagner said. "Abi Otto had the big swing in Game 1 to get us going. In Game 2, we did a great job winning the moments on defense."

The Nighthawks play Concordia in another doubleheader at 1 p.m. MDT on Saturday. With a sweep, they can set the program record for most conference victories in a season.

Depending on how a few other games shake out Saturday, the Nighthawks could also clinch the first postseason berth in program history Saturday.
